Few weeks ago, Kelvin invited me to a dinner in Yamamori Sushi for the farewell dinner of Hideki. Well, this was the first time for me to have a dinner in a restaurant in Dublin, except Chinese restaurants. I was always so frightened by the price on the menu whenever I walked by, but since Kelvin has invited me, I had to go no matter what.
There is an universal rule: Japanese cuisine must be overwhelming expensive outside of Japan (or Taiwan). You have to pay more than 7 euros to have an ordinary box of sushi, while the same thing in Taiwan only costs you around 3 euros. OK, y'all know that the price is high in Dublin, so I will not talk about this here.
Comparing to the Chinese restaurant invasion, Japanese restaurants are quite "scarce" here in Dublin. In addition to Yamamori Noodle/Sushi, there are also Ukiyo Bar, Wagamama and Aya in town.
Located on the quay of Liffey River, Yamamori Sushi is the branch of Yamamori Noodle, which is on Dame St. Just like many shops in Dublin, Yamamori Sushi has an unremarkable storefront, but with an open space inside. The semi-open kitchen was really special, so as to the airy atmosphere in the dinning space.
Yamamori Sushi has a long list of items on their menu, including sushi (nigiri, maki, temaki, fudomaki), noodles, rice and fried food (tenpura).
Hideki ordered the most expensive large sushi platter (Jo Moriawase, €35) after the waiter told him that sukiyaki was sold out. This "luxurious" sushi platter includes 6 pieces sushi, 6 pieces sashimi, 1 temaki, 8 ieces norimaki, sunomono vegetable, garnish. The sashimi looks very fresh and delicious though, the nigiri sushi did not in a very good shape and the seaweed was a little bit wet.
Kelvin had tempura soba noodle for his dinner (€16.95), with deep fried king prawns, plaice and vegetables served witha choiice of noodles in broth.
I ordered sukiyaki as well, so I had to change to Ishiyaki Gohan (Stone grilled rice, €17.50) after knowing there was no sukiyaki. I thought the Ishiyaki Gohan would be hot grilled crab and prawn with rice when reading the description on the menu. But I realized that I was compeletly deceived by the description when it was served in front of me. It is a Korean Bibim Bob (stone bowl rice)....
Although I had an excellent experience of Bibim Bob in Seoul, the Ishiyaki Gohan in Yamamori did not disappoint me too much. The fried king prawns and crab were delicious and an innovative recipe. It's shame that the egg was overcooked and the stone bowl was not hot enough.
The service in Yamamori was decent and efficient, and the waiters/waitresses were friendly. They can serve in Japanese and English. Green tea or water was alwasy ready to serve.
It was a very special experience to eat Japanese food abroad for me. The food in Yamamori was good and quite genuine, and not really overpriced under the price level in Dublin. However, if you are free in lunchtime, you will be able to save almost half of the price on the same items.
